COURSE DESCRIPTION

An accurate understanding of the coding and billing process is critical for rehab professionals. “2017 Coding & Billing for Speech Language Pathology Services” covers the correct use of CPT codes used by speech language pathologists and speech language assistants in all outpatient settings including private practice, hospital-based outpatient departments, rehabilitation agencies, schools, comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation facilities, skilled nursing facilities doing Part B and in a patient’s home. The course will review the definition of substantial of time-based CPT codes per the American Medical Association (AMA) in order to bill correctly to the Medicare program and private insurance carriers. Billing scenarios are discussed and reviewed to ensure speech language pathologists can accurately charge patients correctly for their services. Lastly, the webinar will review CCI edits as they pertain to outpatient speech therapy services and show how what SLP bills may determine whether PT and OT services are paid on the same date of service.

OBJECTIVES

At the completion of this course the participant will be able to:

  • Be able to select and bill the appropriate CPT code based on the type of speech therapy evaluation performed
  • Describe & understand how to select the correct treatment CPT code(s) based on interventions provided
  • Understand how to bill for the evaluation for a speech-generating communication device
  • Differentiate between one-on-one interventions and group therapy
  • Define “per hour”, “each additional 15-minutes”, and “each additional 30-minutes” and what is a substantial portion of a time-based CPT code to bill to Medicare and private insurance carriers
  • Define and distinguish between column 1/column 2 CCI edits
  • Be able to read the CCI edit chart correctly and apply modifier to the correct CPT code on the claim form
  • Understand how what SLP’s bill may impact PT and OT payment when patients are seen on the same day
  • Be able to charge correctly for the services you provide under outpatient therapy benefits for Medicare and private insurance carriers
