What’s Changing with Remote Therapeutic Monitoring in 2026?
Have you not implemented remote therapeutic monitoring (RTM) yet due to the minimum 16 days of monitoring in a 30-day period? Well, in 2026, RTM just got a whole lot easier to bill, so now is your time to implement RTM. In this article, I will answer the following questions:

First Example
- Patient begins RTM on December 18, 2025.
- The 30-day period goes from December 18, 2025 to January 16, 2026
- Within those 30-days, the patient achieves between 2-15 days of data access or data transmissions to monitor the musculoskeletal system with at least 2 of them occurring between January 1 – January 16, 2026.
- This would allow the provider to bill 1 unit of 98985 on January 16, 2026.
Second Example
- Patient begins RTM on November 19, 2025.
- The first 30-day period goes from November 12, 2025 to December 11, 2025
- The second 30-day period goes from December 12, 2025 to January 10, 2026
- Within this second 30-day period, the patient achieves between 2-15 days of data access or data transmissions to monitor the musculoskeletal system with at least 2 of them occurring between January 1 – January 10, 2026.
- Between January 1 – January 10, 2026, the therapist provides between 10-19 minutes of remote therapeutic monitoring treatment management services with at least one interactive communication occurring.
- Patient is discharged from RTM on January 10, 2026
- This would allow the provider to bill 1 unit of 98985 and 1 unit of 98979 on January 10, 2026.
