Telehealth Under Medicare Extended Once PHE Ends

As many of you know, outpatient physical, occupational and speech therapy delivered via telehealth for traditional Medicare beneficiaries was due to expire once the public health emergency (PHE) is declared over. Well, that has now changed due to recent legislation that was signed into law.

In this article, I will answer the following questions:

  1. When will the traditional Medicare program stop paying for outpatient physical, occupational and speech therapy delivered via telehealth?
  2. Why did this change occur?
  3. At this time, when does the PHE end?
  4. Where can I access this change incase I need the reference?

  1. Does the Consolidations Act also cover the extension for PTA’s to treat Medicare pt’s without a PT on site in an outpatient therapy clinic as long as the PT is available via a video call?

  2. Hi Rick. Thank you again for all of your help and guidance navigating these questions. I clicked on supervision requirements article link (Jan 2022). It says:

    “Currently, the PHE ends at the end of the day on January 15, 2022. This means that the revised direct supervision requirement will end on December 31, 2022, unless the PHE goes into 2023 or Congress changes the supervision requirement.”

    Doesn’t this mean that PTA’s in a private practice can treat patients with a PT offsite and available by video call (as long as Texas PT practice act allows it) until the end of this year?
