  1. What are the supervision requirements of a PTA or OTA in a non-private practice setting (submit claims on a UB-04 claim form) when they are treating a Medicare Part B beneficiary for outpatient therapy services?
  2. What are the supervision requirements of a PTA or OTA in a private practice setting (submit claims on a 1500 claim form) when they are treating a Medicare Part B beneficiary for outpatient therapy services?

  1. Thank you Rick. This is always a hot topic in our groups. In our meeting with AOTA last week, it seemed as though we needed to be there virtually with the client and the OTA. However, after reading this, it sounds like, as long as the OTA can reach us by phone we are ok with the Med B for PP.
    Thanks

  2. Wow! Thanks Rick. This is why we are Gold Members. Thanks for keeping us up to date. This Ruling changes the limitations put on us in private practice greatly and will hopefully end with an equitable supervision requirement that helps equalize the playing field for those of us in private practice.

    1. Jerry,

I agree! I do also think it is a great opportunity to lobby for a more equitable supervision requirement.

  3. Do the Medicare requirements also apply to Medicare Advantage plans? Many say they follow “Medicare guidelines”, but it’s unclear to us if that also means the rules for PTA supervision.

    1. You would need to check with each MA plan regarding their rules and regulations for supervision requirements of an assistant.
