Over the past three decades, adult rehabilitation services’ departments in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology have attempted to operationally define, measure, benchmark, and improve clinical efficiency. This trend has been driven by a multitude of external consultants, finance administrators, and large practice managers -rather than those directly managing rehabilitation services. Today, organizations may define efficiency via multiple operational definitions such as billed treatment units/day, patient visits/day, productive worked hours/units of service, minutes of care/day, relative value units/day, or something else, resulting in much industry variation throughout the rehabilitation continuum of care. Are these the appropriate metrics? How can the process evolve to measure value? There are methods to balance the paradoxical need for optimization of physical, occupational, and speech pathology services labor costs with demands for billing, quality, and patient outcomes. This 90-minute webinar will discuss the rationale for rehabilitation services efficiency, provide operational definitions, suggested standards, tactics for improvement, and the industry transition to value.
At the conclusion of this webinar presentation, participants will:
• Describe the historical context and methodology for measuring adult rehabilitation services efficiency throughout the
continuum of care
• Provide examples of suggested standards of efficiency
• Discuss tactical methods to improve efficiency
• Provide an overview of the transition from efficiency to the value of rehabilitation services
