COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This educational program will build upon the basics of ICD-10 by providing in-depth ICD-10 coding, documentation and payment information for a variety of settings for speech and language pathology (SLP) services.  Examples provided in the session will focus on speech and language pathology case studies for adult and geriatric services. This intermediate session includes coding resources and additional tips related to transitioning to ICD-10 (i.e. end-to-end testing). A hands-on approach using case scenarios will be used to incorporate documentation changes and compare ICD-9 to ICD-10 codes. The financial impact of ICD-10 with regard to payment for adult and geriatric speech and language pathology services will also be introduced.

OBJECTIVES:

At the conclusion of this webinar presentation, participants will:

  • Apply ICD-10 Coding concepts to SLP adult and geriatric health services in a variety of settings.
  • Utilize ICD-10 resources for an effective transition to ICD-10
  • Discuss tips for effective end-to-end testing
  • Identify documentation issues pertinent to SLP services for adults and geriatrics
  • Understand the impact of ICD-10 coding to SLP practice.
  • Analyze the changes from ICD-9 to ICD-10 coding.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:

Karen M. Hughes, PT, MS, ATC is a 1985 graduate of Ithaca College’s physical therapy program. She obtained her MS in Health Service Administration from D’Youville College, Buffalo, NY. Karen owned SportsPlus Physical Therapy, PC in Batavia, NY for 18 years, prior to becoming the Director of 8 Outpatient Rehab sites and the Sports Outreach program at Catholic Health in Buffalo. She has attained a Lean Six Sigma Blue Belt (a concentration on healthcare) from the University of Buffalo, as well as the Healthcare Leadership Advancement certification at Cornell University, through the Health Association of NYS.  She has been a member of the APTA since 1985, as well as section member of several different sections over the years, including: the Health Policy Administration, Orthopedics, Sports, and Private Practice. She has years of experience educating physical therapists on documentation and coding.

Jean Jurek, MS, RHIA, CPC has over 25 years of experience in medical coding and the health information profession. Ms. Jurek is a Professor in the Health Information Technology Program at Erie Community College where one of her primary responsibilities includes teaching all medical coding and billing courses.  Jean is President of Jean Jurek Associates Inc, a medical coding, auditing and education company.  Her hands-on experience in coding and auditing compliment her educational programs for clients and students in the classroom.

In 2010, Jean became an AHIMA certified ICD-10 Trainer and Ambassador. She is in the process of finalizing ICD-10 courses and has co-authored an ICD-9-CM text published by McGraw Hill. Both ICD-10 and medical coding audits were the recent topics presented to a regional audience for the Health Care Compliance Association.

Her Master’s Degree was awarded from the State University of New at Buffalo, Department of Social and Preventive Medicine in 2000. Jean resides in Western New York with her family and enjoys playing tennis and traveling.

WHO SHOULD LISTEN:

This session is intended for SLPs, SLP students, supervisors and managers of therapy services. Other professionals who use ICD-10 codes and/or require an understanding of the transition to these codes are welcome to participate.  Please keep in mind that examples provided in this session will be specific to SLP. This is an intermediate level course where the participant should have the basic understanding of ICD-10.
