An accurate understanding of the CPT coding and billing process is critical for rehab professionals. In 2027, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) will have 10 new CPT codes as 92507 is being deleted. 2027 CPT Coding & Billing for Speech Therapy Services covers the correct use of CPT codes used by SLPs and speech-language assistants in all outpatient settings. This includes:

- Rehabilitation Agencies
- Schools
- Comprehensive Outpatient Rehabilitation Facilities
- Skilled Nursing Facilities doing Part B
- Home Health Agencies doing Part B in a patients home
The course will teach participants which CPT codes are service-based and which CPT codes are time-based. In addition, the online course will teach participants what interventions are included within each CPT code.
The course will review Medicare’s 8-minute rule and the definition of substantial time-based CPT codes per the American Medical Association (AMA) in order to bill correctly to insurance carriers who do not adhere to Medicare’s 8-minute rule. Billing scenarios will be discussed and reviewed to ensure SLPs can accurately charge patients correctly for their services not only to the Medicare program but also to non-Medicare insurance carriers.
This course is appropriate for speech-language pathologists who provide outpatient therapy services to pediatrics, adults, and geriatrics.
At the conclusion of this online course presentation, participants will be able to:
- List the 10 new CPT codes applicable to speech therapy in 2027
- Recite the minimum time required to bill each of the 10 new speech therapy CPT codes
- Be able to select and bill the appropriate CPT code based on the type of speech therapy evaluation performed
- Describe & understand how to select the correct treatment CPT code(s) based on interventions provided
- Understand how to bill for the evaluation for a speech-generating communication device and a developmental test assessment
- Define “per hour”, “each additional 15-minutes”, and “each additional 30-minutes” and what is a substantial portion of a time-based CPT code to the bill to Medicare and private insurance carriers
- Be able to charge correctly for the services you provide under outpatient therapy benefits for Medicare and private insurance carriers
Speech-language pathologists, speech-language assistants, private practice owners, and practice administrators, office managers at private practices, as well as administrators, directors, managers, and supervisors in skilled nursing facilities, hospital outpatient therapy departments, schools, rehabilitation agencies, home health agencies providing Part B SLP services in the home, and comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation facilities.
