A question I am often asked are notes written by physical therapist assistants and occupational therapy assistants need to be cosigned by the supervising physical therapist or occupational therapist? To fully answer this question, we must look in two places, your state practice act and the rules and regulations of the insurance carrier. In this article, I will answer the following questions:

  1. Does the Medicare program require notes written by assistants be cosigned by the supervising therapist?
  2. Do private insurance carriers require notes written by assistants be cosigned by the supervising therapist?
  3. How may my state practice act impact co-signature requirements?
