BCBS of Michigan to Implement MPPR

BCBS of MI has placed the MPPR implementation on hold. This information was not placed in the August or September 2022 editions of the “The Record”, but has been confirmed by multiple sources. I will provide updated information and resources when available.

BCBS of Michigan has announced they will align with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and implement the multiple procedure payment reduction (MPPR) policy for outpatient physical, occupational and speech therapy services.   1. Judging by the justification of this reduction in payment, that is the duplicate billing of nonphysician/nonclinical labor, building space, equipment costs etc. I’m assuming that this only applies to dual services in the same company? Also, what if you are in a physician owned practice, and the patient attends therapy and has a doctor’s appt. the same day? Thank you if anyone knows the answers to these.

  2. I thought the implementation of MPPR was on hold. Has BCBS MI finalized their decision to implement?

    1. That is what I heard. This article was written and scheduled prior to their announcement and BCBS of MI did not put this change in their September 2022 of “The Record”.

    As always thank you for your almost always timely sharing of information. In this case though, the initial announcement was made in late June, and through successful advocacy by many throughout the State, BCBS or MI announced late August, and again this week, that they will hold on implementation of the MPPR reduction until further notice. As always this will require us to remain alert and attentive, and we will!
